A Sense of History

We just love old-time things that still have a useful purpose. And that goes for not-so-old things, as well. It's amazing how many useful or lovely items people discard because they simply aren't "the latest thing." It's those things we try to gather, because we know there are others out there who appreciate nice things, and who would cherish them, as well.

As a child, I (Elaine) used to listen to my mother talk about how things were when she was little. I heard about the way they lived. I held the warm "history quilts" they had made by fitting together pieces of Uncle Henry's old farm shirts or Grandma's best church dress. I was allowed to touch the old milk pitcher that had come across the long and weary trail to California on a wagon train with my grandmother. It now occupies the honored position in my china cupboard. I listened to their tales of adventure and danger, and in my mind's eye, I could see those exciting things happening--it was as though I'd been there, too.

Bob, my husband, is a book collector, and he comes with me much of the time as I attend estate sales, yard sales, and thrift shops. His library is much too full to house any more books, so his unique and valuable volumes are eventually passed along.

And so, when we come across something that seems to connect to the history of someone, we purchase it, feeling certain that it will be just the thing to satisfy a need of someone else in eBayland. 

When we make finds, we clean the items up, and research them. When we sell small appliances, clocks, telescopes, linens, glassware, etc., we test and check them to make sure they are working properly and are in good condition before we pass them on.

Sometimes we find something of historical value, and learn the story of that object from an elderly seller. And then we include that story with the item. As we do all this, we meet many interesting people.

Of course, we buy newer things, as well. Things of good quality or intrinsic value.

Chances are you will receive your purchase in a recycled box. That saves you money, because when I used recycled packaging, I don't have to charge a handling fee. It also helps our environment with fewer items discarded before they have been "really used up."
