• The easiest thing for you to do is to take one of your own jackets that fits you very well and measure it with a cloth or plastic tape measure (or a steel tape or yard stick will also work).

• Lay your buttoned jacket face up on a flat surface to make the waist, chest, and sleeve measurements. A bed or kitchen table is great.

• Measure the jacket across the middle just above the waist pockets. Double the reading to get the waist measurement.

• Measure it across the chest right at the armpits and double it to get the chest measurement.

• Measure the sleeve from the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff for the sleeve length.

• Turn the jacket over.

• Measure from shoulder seam to shoulder seam across the top for the shoulder measurement.

• Measure straight down the back from the bottom of the collar to the hem for the length.

Hopefully this easy exercise will take the guesswork out of deciding if a jacket will fit you. Generally, if the jacket fits, the pants will too if you are buying a suit. However, you should know your exact waist measurement and inseam. Usually, there is some extra fabric in the waist and hem so the pants can be let out if needed. And they can almost always be taken in if they are a little too large in the waist of too long in the inseam. Be sure to check your measurements closely.
