Soak, Soak, Soak ~ that's how to get your antique and vintage linens clean!
| Being a vintage/antique linen dealer for 38 years now, the question most asked of me is how do I get my linens so white. My reply is always to soak, soak, soak your white linen and cotton fabrics in hot water with soap, rather than detergent, with old fashion Fels Naptha. Linen is strong when wet so even gently boiling them will clean and whiten them. |

| Thirty-eight years ago there weren't any books on linens to help with identification. The only books available were about antique lace that were published around the turn of the last century with century old photos ~ again, not much help with identification. Luckily, there are now wonderful books on linen and lace from Schiffer Publishing: 20th Century Linen and Lace by Margarite Zalamea and Elizabeth Schofield, Vintage White Linens from A to Z by Marsha Manchester, Graced by Lace by Debra Bonito, and Antique Linens from the Kitchen to the Boudoir, Marsha Manchester ~ all are worthy of your growing library of knowledge. |
