Understanding My Shipping Charges

An honest look at guessing a shipping chagre.
I post the shipping charge (within the USA)in the item's listing. By doing this, you know that cost up front and can calculate it into your maxinum bid. On heavy items (over about 7 pounds)I ask for the Zip code of the bidder after the sale because the further away you are, the more it costs. Books I ship book rate to save a bunch for the bidder. Heavy items shipped close by I may offer 4th class which can save a lot!
When I pick a shipping cost, I try to guess just above the real cost. Sometimes I guess low and pay the extra, most of the time I guess very close or just right. On rare occassions, I guess high and use those proceeds to cover my underguesses. It all works out in the end.
This is not to make extra hidden profit, rather it is to cover the cost for general shipping supplies such as paper, boxes, etc. Even though I use as much recyled packing as I can, shipping 40 - 80 items a week requires that I buy supplies and boxes in bulk.
