I have always had an interest in woodworking which I acquired from my Father as he puttered around the garage building various projects for the house.
When I graduated from college in the 80's and could not find work right away, I began to build pieces of furniture for family and friends to make an income. I started to really gain an appreciation for traditional methods of woodworking as well as using/collecting classical hand tools. I built my first Lathe, a foot operated Spring Pole Lathe and was fascinated by its reciprocal motion and amazed by the fact you could actually build a wood working machine without electrical power and be able to make things with it. That led to a love of foot and hand powered machines of which I have assembled a modest collection of in my shop.
Through the years and various career moves I have always maintained my interest in classical woodworking. It was not until I met my wife Mary however, that we decided to turn this hobby into a business.
We started by building custom furniture and our sales point was that, the pieces we built would be completely hand made with tradtional tools and techniques. We soon discovered the market for such things was small and the price tag could be very high. We started than to shift our business focus on to restoration and repair, where we found a niche here for many years.During that time I was asked to lecture and teach traditional woodworking at various local woodworkers clubs and retail shops. It seemed a natural extension of our business to develop some of the handtools I had made for myself into marketable items and offer them for sale.
The response to our tools has been gratifying and we have since given up the restoration and most of the repair business to concentrate almost full time on building tools and developing new ones and of course I have many more ideas then time to build them.
